Awesome Architecture

A look at architecture and how math, science, and history influence the structures that build up our world.  A hands on building experience.

Cost per student: $10

 

Basketball

Boys and girls learn the fundamentals of ball handling, dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, teamwork, and fair play. Fun basketball games and drills will be incorporated to ensure having “fun” while learning the basics. Good sportsmanship is discussed and expected.

Be a Maker

Join the community of Makers, our next generation of scientists and engineers! Each week we will explore chemistry, electronic circuits, sound and rockets through hands on projects that will amaze your friends! Students will keep a video journal, and test their ideas through student built projects ranging from foam explosions, to making their own batteries, to wiring their own circuits with electro conductive paints. For those ready to take it to the next level, they can upload their creations to diy.org, a community of child makers where they can continue to “Get Skills. Be Awesome.”

Beginning Guitar

Want to learn how to play guitar? Join our group guitar class. No prior experience needed! Students will learn the basics of both finger picking and chord playing on acoustic guitars in this course. Students are welcome to borrow a Summer School guitar, or may bring their own from home. Please no electric instruments. Each player will go home with guitar music book.

Dance Team

​Join the 2018 Summer School Dance Team!  We learn choreographed dance routines and showcase them in a final performance. So grab your pom poms (made in class) and let's dance!

​Design Build: Escape Room Party

Do you love a good mystery?  Love to solve puzzles?  Want to put your computer coding into practice?  You and your classmates will create an authentic escape room complete with codes, clues and secret portals.  Your mission:  Challenging the Summer School Teachers Escape!

Cost per student: $15

 

Drama Club

In this club you will experience the challenge of acting out different parts of a real play. We will also engage in different dramatic and fun games along the way to prepare for our final project. This project will be to perform a fun play in front of an audience of parents and peers.

Exploring Art

Do you have an interest in art but are tired of simply coloring and painting at home? This class is the perfect outlet for budding Picassos!  Exploring Art introduces young artists to many different mediums to create art with in an atmosphere that strengthens motor large and fine motor skills as well as develops a positive sense of self and creativity! Don't know how to make something? That's okay! Whatever you think it should be is how it should be!

Fun in the Sun (Please sign your child up based on the school they attend)

Enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities in Fun in the Sun. We will spend the majority of our time playing softball, kickball, capture the flag, tag games, and much more! Bring sunscreen and a water bottle and get your exercise playing fun games and soaking up the sun of the summer. One day each week is reserved for a wet and wild experience as we will play in the water and try to stay cool.

Fun with Physical Science

Want to build a Rube Goldberg Device? Or make the perfect slime? In this course students will participate in hands-on labs and investigations that have a focus on physical science. Some of the concepts we will investigate will include forces and energy, simple machines, and density of gasses, solids, and liquids.

Game On

This outdoor class is jam packed with great group games that use strategy, teamwork and imagination. Play fun invasion games like Capture the Flag and Pirate Ball. Use your problem-solving skills in games such as the Amazing Race and Yoshi. We won’t forget fun classic games (but with exciting new twists!) like Kickball, Steal the Bacon, and Tag. Students will also use collaboration and imagination to create new games! Bring your water bottle and be ready to move! These are physically active games that emphasize fun, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

How Sports Changed History

This class is all about sports focusing on reading and writing while researching different sports and athletes each week.   This class is a GREAT way to keep reading, writing, and researching the topic that you love...SPORTS!  Do you like History? Do you like sports? Ever wonder how sports have influenced history? Then this is the class for you! Explore the origin of different sports and the major milestones of that sport in history. Learn how competition can influence history more then you’ve every realized.

I Like to Move It

Do you like to move it, move it? Join this active class to explore many ways to keep your body moving! From stretching and yoga to Zumba and dance, you'll learn how to have fun, be silly, make friends, and how to keep your body healthy through movement. At the end of the summer, each student will learn a dance routine to show off their new skills at an end of the year recital!

Kitchen Chemistry

Have you ever wondered how road salt makes ice melt? Or how do crystals form? Why does bread rise? Why does jello wiggle? These questions and many more will be investigated in this course. We will be observing the chemistry that is involved in mixing, baking, and creating our food and beverages.

Cost per student: $20

Math Camp (Current teacher recommendation needed)

​Are numbers crunching your style? Boggling your brain? Do you feel the need for speed? Have fun while reviewing math concepts using hands-on manipulatives, measurement tools, arrays, counting patterns, graphing, math games and more!

Note to parents: Wondering if your child should be in this class?  These classes are designed for reviewing, maintaining, and improving math skills and strategies worked on during the school year. Teachers may choose to recommend this class to students who could benefit from additional support during the summer.  Contact your child’s teacher to see if he/she recommends a skill-based reading/writing class for your child. A verbal recommendation to you is all that is required to sign up.  Summer School will take care of the verification.

Reading/Writing Camp (Current teacher recommendation needed)

Book a trip to camp and uncover the strategies that make you not only a better reader, but a stronger writer too!  We’ll keep you on your toes with surprise endings, mystery word, claims, debates, and speaking your mind.

Science Olympiad:
Do you love science? Do you love showing off your science skills? Take this course and you can have the best summer ever! We will be practicing events that are offered in National Science Olympiad competitions and completing group investigations and observations with the events. There will be a competition between "teams" to score the highest points throughout the summer. Students who are interested in joining the Science Olympiad team at Lake Country School should definitely sign up for the class!

Sew Beautiful

Sew Beautiful this summer! From counted cross stitch to accessories, sewing is back in fashion! Join us for a summer of needles and thread, your walls and wardrobe will never be the same!

Show Choir

Do you like the singing and dance routines you see on Glee? Come and learn how to create a song and dance routine in our Show Choir this summer!  We’ll explore elements of good singing technique, play musical games, and learn how to move together in group choreography while singing!  Class fee includes a Summer Show Choir T-shirt.

Special Ed Reading and Math

​Students enrolled are recommended by their special education teacher. Small group instruction that targets IEP goals in reading and math is meant to maintain skills gained during the school year. Some support is available for general education classes.

Spin on Spanish

Do you like to Make, Build, Design, and Learn? This is a hands-on Maker's class for students who are learning Spanish for the first time, or have had a prior Spanish class or two. We've got a menu of fun activities for every student to choose from including cooking, origami, dioramas, plays, poems, and more!

Sports Galore

Throwing, shooting, splashing, and dribbling! Anyway you like to kick it, you’ll have fun in Sports Galore. Children will enjoy activities that encourage cooperative, team play and independent skills. They will participate in their favorite sport games such as: dodge ball, capture the flag, kickball, soccer, and maybe even a little water fun!

Stop Action Animation

Learn a variety of film making techniques that make inanimate objects appear to move on their own. Create your Stop Action Animation movie this Summer!

Cost per student: $20

Summer School Band

Do you love playing music? Join the summer school band! We will learn new and exciting music, see performances by special guest artists, and will even compose our own piece of music. We will keep working on our musical skills over the summer and will have a blast together! 

Cost per student: $8

The Art of Forensics

Channel natural competitive energy into positive communication strategies, prepare a good speech, discover where to go to find sources and materials, learn how to begin and end a speech, and prepare speaker notes. You will learn, from experience, how to analyze an audience, dress for success, and present yourself as an articulate speaker. Students will research and create a presentation for classmates and parents during the last week of class.

Volleyball I

Calling all fifth and sixth graders that enjoy pushing themselves to improve in a tough sport. We will work on fine tuning our basic volleyball ball skills and scrimmaging against each other to learn how to better play the game of volleyball!
