FOR STUDENTS ENTERING 2ND GRADE IN THE FALL

 

American Girl

Students will have the opportunity to do hands on activities with American Girl Dolls or dolls of their choice.  They will learn and play games, and make food and crafts that were representative of the American Girl Doll periods.  In addition, there will be a 15-20 minute play period each day for students to interact with peers and their dolls. Dolls are welcomed, but not required!

Be an Engineer

Challenge yourself and keep those critical thinking skills fresh over the summer. From bridges, buildings, machines, oil spills, airplanes, Mini-challenge Monday to Fairy Tale Friday and more. Students are presented with a problem and design a solution. All projects include learning traits of an engineer through technology, research, testing, and presenting ideas. As students work together, key skills like collaboration and verbal communication skills are taught and modeled. This class will inspire and continue to develop your engineering mind!

Cost per student: $9

Beginning Piano

Calling all budding musicians! Come and learn how to play the piano in a fun and friendly group piano course setting. We’ll explore basic piano skills, such as how to sit at the piano, how to position your hand at the keyboard, and how to read simple music notation to play some beginner’s songs. We’ll do a variety of musical activities to learn about the keyboard, such as coloring, singing, interactive Smart Board activities, and of course, playing the piano!

Books! Blooms! Birds! & Bugs!

Inspired by favorite children's literature, step outdoors for daily nature-based exploration. Children are encouraged to get dirty to make observations and discoveries that satisfy their natural curiosity and appreciate the beauty of nature. Let's explore together by hiking, planting, composting, bird watching, and collecting insects to make treasure connections to the natural world.

"C" is for Camping

If you would love to explore the world of camping, this class is for you!  We will dive into the outdoor world through learning camping skills such as tent building, fire building, cooking on a campfire, nature studies, outdoor safety and more!  We will sing around the campfire, go on nature hikes, do camp crafts, and play games! We will even tell camp stories around the campfire! Grab your flashlight and let's go camping!

Dance Team

Join the 2018 Summer School Dance Team!  We learn choreographed dance routines and showcase them in a final performance. So grab your pom poms (made in class) and let's dance!

Dazzle with Design

Your young artist will be designing creative art & crafts projects while using a variety of materials. We'll incorporate new techniques through inspiring colorful stories. There will be opportunities for personalized projects in an "art studio" setting one day a week. We'll also add a "Christmas in July" activity time during our last week. No peeking- they'll create their own holiday box to pack away their treasures until December!

Fun in the Sun (Please sign your child up based on the school they attend)

Enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities in Fun in the Sun. We will spend the majority of our time playing softball, kickball, capture the flag, tag games, and much more! Bring sunscreen and a water bottle and get your exercise playing fun games and soaking up the sun of the summer. One day each week is reserved for a wet and wild experience as we will play in the water and try to stay cool.

Garden Sprouts

​If you love the outdoors and like getting your hands dirty, this is the class for you! We will learn all about the plant cycle while planting fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. We will learn about the insects that help our plants grow and make many crafts using parts of nature. This class will give your child a hands on experience to learning all about plants making them a garden expert!

Gym Games Galore

Gym Games Galore offers students an awesome opportunity to participate in various indoor sports and activities: Pirate Ball, Floor Hockey, Kick Ball, Basketball, Dodgeball, Indoor Soccer, Matball, Handball, Capture the Flag, and Speedball. So, grab your gym shoes and let's go!

I Like to Move It

Do you like to move it, move it? Join this active class to explore many ways to keep your body moving! From stretching and yoga to Zumba and dance, you'll learn how to have fun, be silly, make friends, and how to keep your body healthy through movement. At the end of the summer, each student will learn a dance routine to show off their new skills at an end of the year recital!

Learning with LEGOS

Learning with LEGOS is the perfect combination of education and fun! Students will use their creativity and imagination, along the most popular toy ever made, to design, create, and learn! Come join the fun and see how Legos can be used to build skills essential to student success through fun, focused learning activities.

Math Games

Come and play a variety of math and strategy games to keep your math brain in shape all summer long!  You will be competing in fun challenging math games with friends!

Cost per student: $5

Math Camp (Current teacher recommendation needed)

Are numbers crunching your style? Boggling your brain? Do you feel the need for speed? Have fun while reviewing math concepts using hands-on manipulatives, measurement tools, arrays, counting patterns, graphing, math games and more!

Note to parents: Wondering if your child should be in this class?  These classes are designed for reviewing, maintaining, and improving math skills and strategies worked on during the school year. Teachers may choose to recommend this class to students who could benefit from additional support during the summer.  Contact your child’s teacher to see if he/she recommends a skill-based reading/writing class for your child. A verbal recommendation to you is all that is required to sign up.  Summer School will take care of the verification.

Ocean Life

Do all sharks eat fish? Can an octopus change colors? Does echolocation really work like it does in Finding Dory? All these questions will be answered and more in Ocean Life! Dive into this class and learn all about the big blue ocean and it’s marine life! We will talk about the fish, mammals and many other animals that call this wet place home. We will even go into the deep dark abyss and see the crazy creatures there! Take a swim with us and have a splash of a good time in Ocean Life!

Playground Games

If recess is your favorite time of the school day, then this is the class for you! In this class we will be learning new games to play outside as well as learning about teamwork and cooperation. We will run, jump, hit, kick, throw and laugh a lot while playing all of the classic playground games while learning new games! If your child enjoys the outdoors and is active then this is the class for them!

Reading/Writing Camp (Current teacher recommendation needed)

Book a trip to camp and uncover the strategies that make you not only a better reader, but a stronger writer too!  We’ll keep you on your toes with surprise endings, mystery word, claims, debates, and speaking your mind.

Spanish Adventures

Hola! This beginning level class is ideal for students who are ready to begin learning Spanish. Games, music, crafts, and other hands on activities are used to help introduce numbers, colors, greetings, animals, food, feelings, weather, the body parts, the alphabet, and Spanish speaking countries. A fiesta is held some time during the last week.

Special Ed Reading and Math

Students enrolled are recommended by their special education teacher. Small group instruction that targets IEP goals in reading and math is meant to maintain skills gained during the school year. Some support is available for general education classes.

Sports Galore

Throwing, shooting, splashing, and dribbling! Anyway you like to kick it, you’ll have fun in Sports Galore. Children will enjoy activities that encourage cooperative, team play and independent skills. They will participate in their favorite sport games such as: dodge ball, capture the flag, kickball, soccer, and maybe even a little water fun!

Story Hour

Come and enjoy picture books by great authors. Through songs, simple art projects, and activities students will dig deeper into the story and theme.  Bring your creative self and get ready to have some fun reading!

Superhero Adventure

It's a bird! It's a plane! No... it's kids having "out of this world" fun at summer school! Do you like superheroes? Do you like to be creative? In this class you will develop your own superpowers and design your super costume! You and your super friends will create secret identities while studying a variety of popular superheroes. We will have tons of fun while strengthening reading and writing skills. Come join the adventure.

Zany Zoo!

Do you love animals? We'll learn about animal habitats, fun facts, riddles and more! Animal stories will excite your creativity for projects using mixed media. You'll have the opportunity to be an author and illustrator of your own fun animal story.
